“Cease illegal logging, its impact is not applauding”

The Issue

A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the
air and giving fresh strength to our people. -Franklin D. Roosevelt

Purpose:

  • To lessen the nation's unlawful logging;
  • To sustain a well and healthy environment for both people and animals;
  • To protect the nation's natural resources for future generation

Vision:
A country that values and preserves its natural resources and pristine environment. Due to the harm that illegal logging causes to individuals, communities, and the environment, it is crucial to stop it. In addition to causing human rights violations, discontent, and violence, it can rob forest people of their means of subsistence and the resources they depend on.

Mission:
This petition will serve as the catalyst for the developing world, enabling human participation in the protection, preservation, and natural resources management that will ameliorate the present and future condition of our common home. By focusing on the primary causes of illegal logging, including as corruption, power disparities, a lack of clarity on land rights, and the disproportionate influence of the timber sector and other special interest groups on forest policies and legislation, illegal logging can be reduced.

About:
For the last 40 years, Philippines is one of the most severely deforested countries in the tropics. Approximately, the Philippines’ forests covered 21 million hectares in 1900, accounting for 70% of the country’s entire land area. Only 800,000 hectares of the 5.5 million hectares forest that existed in 1990 were primary forests. According to the U.N. FAO, the change in forest cover or the average of the trees lost in the Philippines between 1990 to 2010 is around 54,750 ha or 0.83% per year. In this present time, the said country is losing around 52,000 trees daily, and round about 47,000 hectares of forest are abolishing yearly.

Despite all the information mentioned, illegal logging is one of the environmental issue that the Philippines is currently facing. It has become a threat to many of the nation's vital resources as well as to people and animals. The Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, the largest protected area in the Philippines, is one of those in danger; it endangers the region's biodiversity and rural way of life. Annually, between 20,000 and 35,000 cu. m wood is extracted from the park. Furthermore, illegal logging frighten the wildlife of people as it can deprive the natural resources they rely on. Aside from that, the inhabitants of the country is suffering from landslides and flooding as it deteriorates and degrade the forest. In addition, 50 to 100 species of animals are vanishing daily as a result of illegal logging, which could eventually result in animal extinction.These are merely few of the negative repercussions of illegal logging; if we continue to exploit the environment by engaging in numerous unlawful activities, the future of our nation will be in danger.

The Philippines has numerous laws in contrary to illegal logging. The Republic Act 3701, a law intended to prevent the destruction of forests, is one of them. . Nevertheless, despite the fact that there are existing laws, one of the reasons why things are growing worse is due to lack of law enforcement.  As poverty is pervasive in the nation, corruption is also one of the root causes—- some law enforcement officers accept bribes from individuals involve in illegal activities – including illegal logging.

As illegal logging continues, the remaing forest will be endangered.

However, signing this petition may be a small action, but truly it will and can make a difference.

“If people deserve to live with ease and in peace,cutting of trees must be cease
