Apologize for Aisha Tyler's remarks

The Issue

I caught a clip of "The Talk" on 2/12/15 at my gym today and was shocked by the comments of Aisha Tyler.

The hosts were discussing David Moore's call for the banning of yoga pants. Aisha Tyler thought it was ridiculous and then went on to say, "We're not in shari'iah law here. You know, his next step here is to put everyone in a veil and a bag so that you can't see nothing."

Aisha Tyler does not have knowledge of shari'ah law that could qualify her to make this kind of statement, and millions of Muslim women wear the veil of their own accord and hold the practice dear. Further, to describe some Muslim women's clothing as a 'bag' is demeaning and dehumanizing. Her comments perpetuate lies and misunderstanding about Islam as a faith and Muslims as people.

Her comments are indicative of how it is now socially acceptable that even seemingly open-minded, liberal people can insult Islam and Muslims with perceived immunity. This culture of normalizing anti-Islam sentiment, fueled by the likes of known Islamophobes like Ann Coulter or political opportunists like Bobby Jindal, dehumanizes Muslims to the point where someone can shoot three of us over a "parking dispute," set fire to our mosque or mock our faith on daytime TV for some laughs.

We, the undersigned, expect a public apology, either on air or by written statement, by the producers of "The Talk" and Aisha Tyler for her comments.

Thank you.
