On Tuesday night, February 10, three young Muslim Americans, Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha, were murdered execution-style in their home by their neighbor Craig Stephen Hicks. Hicks was arrested and charged with first degree murder after turning himself in. The nature of the murders, the history of the relationship between Hicks and the three victims, and online posts made previously by Hicks have made it clear to many that this was a hate crime. Chapel Hill police have insisted that the murder appeared to be because of a dispute over parking.
The next day, CBS' "Inside Edition" decided to use the murder of these three innocent people as a tasteless segue into a segment about how to find a parking spot. Many have registered their outrage on Inside Edition's facebook page, and the video appears to have been taken down, but no response or apology has been given. You can still hear the video here:
In the video, anchor Deborah Norville declares, "Three college students are dead, their neighbor has been charged. Now initially some said it was a hate crime but police say the dispute was over parking at the apartment complex. Now finding a parking space is one of those things that can push some people over the edge, but there is a way to always find a spot at the mall. Jim Moret helps you break the code."
Moret begins the segment by saying that "finding a parking spot can be incredibly frustrating." More frustrating than the white-washing of Islamophobia and murder? Please tell CBS and Inside Edition that this is completely unacceptable.
