Proposal to ban the production and sale of vegan cat foods.

As veganism becomes more prominent in our society people have taken to pushing this lifestyle/diet/moral outlook onto their pets, this can be fine for some animals with many already being natural herbivores or omnivores. However the issue arises as I see vegan cat food popping up in shops and online. 

Cats are one animal that absolutely cannot be vegan, not only are cats natural carnivores, they’re obligate carnivores, they have evolved biologically to literally need meat as their main food source. This is a biological fact for most if not all feline species. And yes that does include domestic house cats. Cats, having evolved to thrive and survive off animal protein, can run into many issue when not fed correctly. A cats digestive tract is short because it’s designed to break down meat quickly, feeding them plant based food can cause many digestive issues because of this. A high protein need is also a consideration, yes, plants do contain protein but meat contains complete proteins in large amounts and is easily digested for cats as stated above. Another issue often caused by plant based food for cats is urinary problems. Plants foods can cause a cats urine to become more alkaline than it should be leading to urinary stones, these are just a few of the many health problems caused by not feeding cats a proper meat diet. 

Plants and plant based foods alone do not provide the correct nutrients needed for a cat to maintain a healthy life. To push a vegan diet on to your pet is one thing but to push it onto an animal that naturally needs to consume meat to live healthily and maintain its strength/mind and fitness is, I would argue, verging on animal abuse. I see a lot of dog owners pushing a vegan diet on their dogs, which, is possibly not their optimum and certainly not preferred diet, however dogs are naturally omnivores, meat isn’t essential for their health like it is for cats. 

So please stand with me in forcing a ban on the production of these vegan cat foods, it’s cruel and it’s not done for animal, it’s done for the human so they can match their pets diet to their own regardless of what harm it may cause. It’s ridiculous and it’s abuse. So please consider signing if your a cat lover or indeed an animal lover in general to save these animals from being fed a poor diet and developing unnecessary health issues due to their owners own personal views.
