Mandatory Black History Education in NC

Mandatory Black History Education in NC
Why this petition matters

Dear Superintendent Truitt,
I am writing you in regards to the mandatory teaching of Holocaust history to our children in the North Carolina public school system that was included in the recent NC budget. Last year this time, African American activists , as well as some African American and Native American members of the House of Representatives asked for Black history and Native American history to be included into the Holocaust Education Bill. You can’t imagine my, shock, when I found out that the Holocaust education requirement has been mandated courtesy of it being buried inside a lengthy budget, While I am not against any of the atrocities that have plagued society being taught in classrooms, I am outraged by the double standard that has been applied here.
Over the last year, there has been a vicious attack on anti-racism education and “Critical Race Theory,” however, the same educators, politicians and activist groups who were in opposition to anti-racism education were either in support or were silent in regards to mandatory Holocaust education. This leaves one to believe that a cultural bias is at play and the real target of the anti-racism and anti- “CRT” education movement is black history and black cultural studies.
Therefore, I am asking that a NC Black Holocaust Council be created with equal funding and influence as the NC Council on the Holocaust and , also, that black history become a mandatory part of the public school curriculum. If this does not happen it will, strongly, suggest that white privilege has no ethnic boundaries in North Carolina.
Thank you,
