The Issue

We, the students of COM-2140-C01: Race, Gender, & Sexuality in the Media believe that Castleton University should make race, gender, and sexuality studies a priority in the core curriculum by expanding the general education requirements to include a Diversity Intensive (DI) designation. Courses within this designation would tackle issues related to discrimination, equity, constructions of power, privilege, policy development, representation, and social justice in relationship to race, gender, and sexuality studies.

While courses that could fit within the DI designation are already available for students to take at their discretion, we feel that the knowledge gained from these courses is fundamental to a liberal arts education, and therefore must be required within the general education requirements. Our core curriculum must reflect the diverse and intersectional nature of our community and society at large. For these reasons, Castleton University should reconsider its general education requirements to include a DI designation.
