On July 3rd, 2020, FedEx, the stadium sponser for the Washington Redskins, asked the Redskins to change their name to stand in solidarity with the harmful rhetorical the name holds. The history of the term "Redskins" is harmful, hurtful, and targets a marginalized group of people. 

When Carthage added the space between "red" and "men'' it did not erase the fact that it is still a slur that continues to cause harm to Indigenous people. If Carthage is really committed to Diversity and Inclusion, its changes need to be deliberate and decisive, not incremental and performative. Carthage can take this as a call to leap into community healing.

Carthage students, faculty, alumni, and especially my current and former student athletes, I am asking you to sign this petition to start the review process to change the mascot Carthage has held since its inception. Waiting is no longer an option. 

If you want to stand with racial justice in America, do what is right and change your name.
