In commemoration for leading the nonviolent fight for freedom and equality for all people, most especially people of color, Martin has a memorial.  In commemoration of leading the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA through one of the most tumultuous times in her history and for signing the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln has a memorial.  In commemoration for defending and protecting the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA during times of war and for giving the ultimate sacrifice to THIS nation, the Tomb of the Unknowns was commissioned.  By way of these examples, memorials are typically erected to commemorate individuals who have made their community, their country, the world better than when they found it.

The memorial to soldiers from Caroline County who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War is located in front of the Courthouse in the Town of Bowling Green, VA., which by the way, serves as the County Seat of Caroline.  How ironic is it that a memorial honoring men who committed treason against the United States of America by fighting to overthrow the government sits in front of a courthouse where the rule of law is supposed to be administered fairly and justly; where presiding judges are required to take an oath “swearing or affirming to support the Constitution of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."  This memorial commemorates the fight to keep Africans, brought to America, enslaved so that the needs of white people, whether these needs be economic, carnal, or otherwise, could continue to be met.

As an African-America citizen of Caroline County whose father fought for the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in the Korean War, I find this monument to be highly offensive and patently inappropriate for the reasons previously stated.  To continue to commemorate the soldiers who fought to continue the system of slavery in this nation is a slap in the face of every African-America citizen of Caroline County, VA. and all others who appreciate the fact that the Confederate cause does not warrant tacit or explicit governmental approval.  The very location of this statue begs the question of whether this current administration supports the continued commemoration of the “War of Southern Aggression”.

I am petitioning the Caroline County, VA. Board of Supervisors, pursuant to the new authority granted to them by the Commonwealth of Virginia in VA Code §15.2-1812, to take all necessary actions to remove the Memorial to Confederate Veterans of Caroline County located in front of the Courthouse in Bowling, Green, VA.
