CUSD Students Demand the Return of Asynchronous Wednesdays

The Issue

On Wednesday March 24, members of the CUSD Board of Trustees (Ray Pearson, Claudine Jones, Elisa Williamson) voted to eliminate asynchronous Wednesdays for all students and have in-person cohorts return to school 5 days a week.

We are demanding a return of asynchronous Wednesdays because the facts are simple.

  • 95% of Carlsbad High students believe that the School Board has to keep asynchronous Wednesdays until the end of the academic year.

The Board ignored this.

  • 600+ Sage Creek students signed a petition demanding that asynchronous Wednesdays be kept.

The Board ignored this.

  • We are STILL in a pandemic. The mental toll on students and teachers especially, has not faded whatsoever. Suicide, depression, burnout, and stress are all still skyrocketing and Wednesdays are the best tool school has given us to deal with these rising threats.

The Board ignored this.

  • 49% of Carlsbad High and 45% of Sage Creek students have chosen to remain in Distance Learning for the rest of the year. They will now have to sit an extra 6+ hours a day in front of the computer. Absolutely no medical expert would ever recommend this.

The Board ignored this.

  • A compromise, where at-person cohorts can go to school for 4 days a week (doubling their amount in school after just one week of having returned). This compromise would allow parents and students who are willing to return to school for more time there, but also keep asynchronous Wednesdays.

What the Board did not ignore is the minority of out-of-touch parents who have not had to go to school, have not had to plan for school, and do not take the pandemic seriously as many students are forced to.
