The Issue
Carlsbad High School is located in Carlsbad New Mexico a Culturally Historic area of southeast New Mexico.
Caudill, Rowlett and Scott (CSR) designed schools in 26 states and 8 countries. In 1972 this firm received the Architecture Firm Award, the highest award of the American Institute of Architects for their Architectural Designs.
The Caudill Class Award is a design standard presented to School Districts and architects based on Areas of Distinction.
Carlsbad High School was designed by William Caudill and the architectural company he founded. (CSR)
Carlsbad High School is in the Geologically and Archaeological Significant area of the Guadalupe Mountains and Permian Basin of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas.
As part of an Ancient Reef this area is known for Cave Systems and Karsts associated with the Limestone strata that produced the Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The school was constructed near a pre-existing cave system.
Archaeological Tests and Excavations have revealed the Significant Historical Presence of Human Activity in this area including the Basketmaker, and later Paleo Indigenous Cultural Groups in this Zone of Preservation.
The Alumni of Carlsbad High School are recognized Nationally and Internationally for contributions to Humanity in the Arts and Sciences and Athletic Achievements in Sports at all levels.
The Petitioners therefore believe that Carlsbad High School should be designated as an Historic Landmark under the Historic Preservation Criteria established by the City of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
