Dissolve Aramark Contract On Carleton University Campus

Dissolve Aramark Contract On Carleton University Campus

The Issue

WHO: We, CU Global Promise, are a club on Carleton University campus advocating for human rights and social justice issues globally and in our community. Ava DuVernay’s 2016 documentary; 13th brings to light massive corporations who are complicit in prison labour in Canada and the United States. One of these companies being Aramark, who also operate on the Carleton University campus, meaning that students are unknowingly involved.

WHAT: Aramark is a multi-billion dollar company which  profits off of prison labour, as well as provides poor quality of food (sometimes including maggots, mold, or unsubstantial amounts) to those incarcerated.

WHERE: Aramark is currently partnered with Dining Services at Carleton University and are currently locked into a 5 year contract until 2023. The first step we wish to achieve in creating this petition is to dissolve the contract between Aramark and Carleton University.

WHY: Carleton University claims to be in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, however they are complicit in actions contrary to that through their partnership with Aramark. In order for them to actively work towards anti-racism they need to have direct action in dismantling the oppressive systems that they are holding up. If not, this recognition of Black solidarity is not actively supporting the cause and creating erasure of responsibility by supporting companies that engage in discriminatory actions.

HOW: By bringing awareness to this issue and circulating this petition, we hope to keep Carleton University accountable for its decisions and partnerships and to demonstrate that as students, we are interested in creating ways for Carleton University to engage in ethical practices.
