I understand that you may be curious about the connection between a Medicare Advantage program and a petition for family caregivers and direct care workers. Allow me to shed some light on the matter.

We find ourselves amidst a storm, with various issues demanding our attention. A public health crisis currently engulfs us, and unfortunately, it is only expected to worsen.

Recently, while assisting a client in finding suitable therapy options for his wife following a stroke, a disheartening incident occurred that left me perturbed. The appointment prior to ours involved a frail 79-year-old woman in dire need of therapy to restore her strength. Shockingly, the family was informed that their Medicare Advantage program necessitated a daily payment of $225.

This type of cost-sharing plan has become increasingly common among our aging population. However, it is distressing to witness commercials advertising the benefits entitled to you, without disclosing the potential denial of crucial care when it is most needed. These high copays and out-of-pocket expenses serve as deterrents to utilizing these benefits.

The primary caregiver, the patient's daughter, was utterly disconsolate. Her anguish and frustration were palpable as she grappled with the challenge of providing round-the-clock care for her mother.

Twenty years ago, when I started one of my sites, statistics concerning family caregivers were already bleak. At that time, 50% of family caregivers fell gravely ill or passed away before the individuals they cared for. Shockingly, that statistic has now risen to 63%. The overwhelming stress and burden of caregiving take a severe toll on the physical and financial well-being of family caregivers.

The dire shortage of direct care workers will only exacerbate if significant changes are not implemented in the long-term care industry.  It is important to acknowledge that family caregivers and direct care workers form the backbone of the long-term care community. The immense stress and burdens associated with caregiving have detrimental effects on the health and finances of family caregivers, making it impossible for them to save for their own future care needs.

Furthermore, the direct care workers are undervalued, underpaid, and many are dependent on public assistance. The consequences of the shortage in direct care workers are already becoming evident.

We are championing a program that recognizes and compensates family caregivers for their selfless dedication to caring for others. Moreover, we advocate for accessible healthcare benefits and affordable respite care to support family caregivers. It is imperative that we unite and advocate for ourselves to address the pressing needs of family caregivers.

The bond between direct care workers and their clients is built on trust and compassion. This relationship flourishes when direct care workers receive proper training, fair wages, and acknowledgment for their crucial role in the long-term care support sector.

It is regrettable that direct care workers are undervalued, underpaid, despite being essential to the long-term care services in our country.

Over the next 10 years, the direct care workforce is projected to generate more new jobs than any other occupation. To fortify this workforce, we must advocate for federal investment.

This investment will not only strengthen our economy but also uplift the direct care worker by elevating their status above the poverty line.

We strongly advocate for the essential designation of direct care workers and providing them with living wages. It is unacceptable for direct care workers to provide full-time care while living in poverty, as it severely compromises the quality of care.

Did you know that one in four caregivers is a millennial, and one in five is Gen Z? Loneliness is a common experience for caregivers, especially the younger ones, often without them even realizing it. However, rest assured that you are not alone. Share your caregiving journey with others and help combat the stigma.

When We Stand United and Speak as One Voice, Caregivers Will Be Heard!

Regardless of whether you are a full-time worker, part-time worker, or a family caregiver, the demands can be overwhelming. You may feel pulled in many directions without adequate resources to rely on.

Some of the most pressing concerns for family caregivers include:

  •  The burden of medical bills not covered by insurance or Medicare. With the growing Medicare Advantage programs, the financial burden will be overwhelming.
  • Transportation challenges
  • The need for support of direct care workers
  •  And lack of downtime.

The emotional and physical strain of caregiving necessitates financial support, respite care, and health care benefits. These are things the family caregivers are lacking.

The current system is not sustainable and it is putting a strain on both family caregivers and direct care workers. By signing our petition, you are advocating for change and pushing for better policies that will provide relief for both groups. Let's make sure the government understands the importance of addressing these issues and takes action to support those who are caring for our aging population. Sign our petition today. Please share with everyone you know. As we will all be a caregiver for someone in the future.

Rosalynn Carter said it first and she said it best:

"There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers."
