Statistics You Need to Know

40% of American who get their insurance through work had difficulty affording care or covering their health care costs in the past 12 months.

Between Jan to July 2019 3,400 drugs had rate increases. The average cost was 5X higher than inflation.

The US pays 250% time more than Australia and other countries, even though our taxpayers spent $50 billion dollars helping to develop those drugs.

The CEO's of pharmaceutical companies salaries are in the tens of millions, while their employees salaries have not kept up with the rising inflation.

The role of family caregivers in our society cannot be underestimated. These individuals selflessly provide care to their loved ones, often at the expense of their own physical and financial well-being. However, the broken healthcare system not only fails to support these family caregivers but also adds more stress and burden through high deductibles, copays, and lack of respite services.

This lack of support also extends to direct care workers, who are crucial in providing quality care but are often undervalued and overworked. The combination of these issues is creating a crisis for family caregivers and their loved ones, as well as the entire healthcare system. In this post, we will take a closer look at the impact of the broken healthcare system on family caregivers and direct care workers, and why it is crucial to address this crisis and support these essential individuals.

The Signs of a Collapsing Health Care System Are Everywhere

Did you know that the largest nurses strike occured recently?  It's a stark reminder of the dire situation our healthcare system is facing. Nurses play a crucial role in keeping hospitals running smoothly, yet they're not being fairly compensated or given the staffing ratios they need to provide safe care. And here's the irony – to replace these striking nurses, healthcare systems will have to hire temporary staff from agencies, adding to their financial problems. It's clear that if we don't start valuing healthcare workers and investing in their well-being, we won't be able to overcome the challenges we face in the industry.

Low Reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid and ObamaCare is causing a shortage of doctors, specialists and hospitals.

Think about all the hospitals across the country that are losing millions, if not billions, of dollars every year. They're being forced to shutdown essential services like urgent care, pediatrics, and obstetrics just to stay afloat. And one of the main reasons for this crisis is the lack of staff. Ever since the pandemic, hospitals have been relying heavily on temporary workers, which has negatively impacted patient care. Instead of having a consistent team that can build relationships with patients, hospitals are now dependent on short-term contract workers. This new staffing model has created a host of problems both professionally and financially.

Furthermore, this shortage of staff has led to a reduction vital patient services. Some healthcare systems have even had to close entire hospitals because they couldn't find enough staff. Outpatient services have seen a decrease in operating hours, making it increasingly difficult for people to access timely care. And it's the underserved communities that are suffering the most from this lack of available services. The Family Caregiver is bearing the brunt of a failing health care system.

But the consequences don't stop there. Operating rooms are being closed due to staffing issues, causing delays in elective and emergent procedures. Patients who are critically ill can spend hours or even days waiting for a bed to become available, prolonging their suffering. And even when these patients are ready for discharge, they face long waits to be transferred to rehab or skilled nursing facilities due to short staffing. This breakdown in the healthcare team is going to result in more complications and poor outcomes in the years to come.

On top of all this, the financial strain caused by staff shortages and the use of temporary workers is pushing many healthcare facilities to the brink of instability. We're seeing daily reports of hospitals, both big and small, losing billions of dollars. This not only affects rural hospitals with slim margins, but also larger urban facilities. The closure of these important healthcare services will have a lasting impact on our communities for generations to come.

The question we need to ask ourselves is: if all the hospitals and healthcare facilities close down, where will we go for care? The answer is not a comforting one. And it's not just healthcare that will suffer – other industries, like medical technology, will also be hit hard. Without a steady stream of revenue, these companies won't be able to sell essential equipment or invest in infrastructure improvements.

It's high time that this crisis becomes a major news story and that our leaders at the local and national level start addressing these pressing issues. The future of our healthcare system depends on it.

Let's work together to make a difference and ensure that they are valued and respected in our society. Join us in supporting caregiver relief today! #SupportHealthcareWorkers #Adv
