Capital Capybaras started this petition to Capital University and

Recently Capital University decided to retire the Crusader name associated with their mascot and sports teams. After that decision, the university opened it up to the public to gather ideas for what their next mascot should be. After receiving over 1,500 ideas, four unoriginal, overused, and indistinct ideas were presented to the Capital community to vote on.

The Capital Capybaras reportedly received more write-in votes than any other choice. The Capybara movement was started by a group of alumni and current undergraduate students who wanted to see Capital keep the legacy of distinct branding, while moving forward with a mascot whose history is not rooted in violence. Many with an outside perspective see small Ohio liberal art colleges as a dime a dozen. People who have experienced the “CapFam” community know that it is a unique, inclusive university and students and alumni alike would like to see the University pursue a mascot and branding which shows to the world at large that we are different from the 59 colleges and universities who use “Hawks” (or some variation of Hawks) as their mascot, from the 5 colleges and universities who use “Comets” as their mascot, and from the 19 colleges and universities who use some variation of “Wolves” as their mascot. This is not to mention the professional sports teams whose long shadows and supporter groups greatly outnumber a smaller university like Capital. Zero US colleges and universities currently use the Capybara as their mascot.

The Capybara offers a chance for Capital University to be unique and demonstrate the ideals of people, community, and humanity outlined in Capital’s Core Values. Please sign this petition to show Capital University:

1) How disappointed we are in the choices we have been given for a mascot
2) Request transparency in the selection process for why a choice with tremendous student and alumni support was entirely disregarded
3) Advocate for the inclusion of the Capybara as an option for voting.
