Cape Town public spaces - Illegal squatting
The Issue
No one should be living on the streets. Desperate times have disastrous effects on many. Illegal squatting is a very real issue and should be assisted in a structured manner, not fed and supported.
No great city in the world will support, tolerate or allow illegal squatting in its public spaces.
Law-abiding citizens/local ratepayers demand they are taken off the streets, assisted in an orderly, centralised, humane fashion.
Landmark areas, public spaces and otherwise well maintained communal areas are fast becoming riddled with drugs, human waste and increased criminality.
- Local residents are prepared to contribute towards a long-term solution, not to give handouts.
- Vagrancy is on the rise, many are faced with no other options. Some are taking advantage of their desperation, and other evils are starting to show their ugly face.
- Local support groups are rallying legal support to challenge the COCT by-laws to aide and assist the squatters to occupy any spaces they seem fit.
- The already desperate local economy will disintegrate should this continue.
- Homelessness is on the rise due to Covid-19 and needs to be dealt with swiftly, not sustained and allowed to mushroom out of control.
