Cap or Eliminate Virginia’s Excessive Personal Property Car Tax

The Issue

In Virginia, families are being punished with the highest personal vehicle property taxes in the nation. Every year, car owners must pay hundreds to thousands of dollars. With car owners having to come up with well over $1,000 to keep the car they already own.

This isn’t a one-time fee. It’s a perpetual tax that treats your car as if it were brand new every single year. For working families, students, and retirees—especially in a commuter-heavy state like Virginia—this creates an unfair and unnecessary financial burden.

Why Change Is Needed

Virginia ranks as the highest among states for vehicle property taxes.
People who sacrifice to buy safe, reliable vehicles are punished with the steepest bills.

Cars are often overvalued by tax assessments, forcing owners to overpay—essentially adding an extra “car bill” every single year.

Our Call to Action

We urge the Virginia General Assembly and Governor to reform or repeal this outdated tax system by:

Placing a cap of no more than $1,000 per year per vehicle for vehicles under 150k,

OR

Eliminating the personal property car tax entirely.

The Impact

This reform would stop unfairly burdening Virginia families with excessive taxes, while still allowing for a fair contribution to local revenues. Virginians should not have to pay a never-ending fee just to own the cars they rely on every day.
