Cap Mississauga Property Tax Increases to a Fair, Fixed Rate

Cap Mississauga Property Tax Increases to a Fair, Fixed Rate
The Issue
To: Carolyn Parrish & Mississauga City Council
From: Concerned Residents of Mississauga
We, the residents of Mississauga, are calling on our municipal leaders to urgently address the persistent and disproportionate rise in property taxes that are placing an unsustainable financial burden on homeowners and renters alike.
🔍 What’s Happening?
In 2024, Mississauga residents saw a combined property tax increase of 7.2%, with average bills rising by $465–$600 per household. Now in 2025, we're facing a projected 9.2% increase, driven in large part by a 23% spike in Peel Regional Police costs. These increases far exceed the national inflation rate and are compounding the financial stress on families already grappling with higher food prices, housing costs, utilities, and interest rates.
Meanwhile, despite higher tax rates, Mississauga still faces over $1 billion in unmet infrastructure needs—raising questions about long-term financial sustainability and accountability.
🧾 What We’re Asking For:
We respectfully urge Mississauga City Council and relevant regional bodies to:
✅ Cap property tax increases at a fixed, affordable percentage annually (e.g. no more than the Consumer Price Index + 1%)
✅ Push for greater cost accountability from regional bodies, including Peel Regional Police
✅ Publish transparent annual tax reports, outlining clearly where resident tax dollars go
✅ Pursue local governance reforms, to reduce reliance on regional services that drive up costs without direct accountability to Mississauga taxpayers
🧠 Why This Matters:
Mississauga is one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada, with a higher average property value and higher-than-average property tax rate. But the rapid tax increases are no longer sustainable.
Our residents deserve:
🔒 Predictability in household budgeting
👪 Financial relief for families, seniors, and first-time homeowners
🏙️ A city that grows with its people—not at their expense
As Psalm 133:1 reminds us, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” That unity must now include fiscal compassion and responsible governance.
✍️ By signing this petition, you are saying:
“We need fair, stable, and transparent taxation in Mississauga. Our voices—and our wallets—deserve respect.”
Let’s send a clear, unified message to City Hall:
💬 Cap the hikes. Respect the residents. Protect our future.
