Cap and cut junk fees on Consumers Energy bills

Cap and cut junk fees on Consumers Energy bills
The Issue
The amount we as customers are being ripped off by our utility providers is out of hand. As someone who is a middle class working American and living on a budget, I know firsthand how challenging it is to manage bills with the constant increase in unexpected charges. These fees disproportionately impact those of us who are middle class, low-income, or retired, making it harder for us to make ends meet. The monthly surprise of inexplainable fees is not only unfair, but it feels like an orchestrated attempt to line the pockets of executives at Consumers Energy.
Currently, Consumers Energy electric bills are rife with "junk fees" that seem to lack transparency and accountability. These fees are often hidden within our bills and can include excessive charges for metering, service delivery, or undefined "administrative" costs. According to data from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), utility rates have been rising consistently, yet the justification for these additional fees remains murky at best.
What we need is action from the Michigan Public Service Commission to investigate and regulate these exorbitant fees. By enforcing a cap on what utility companies can charge as additional fees, we can alleviate the unnecessary financial burden on customers and ensure fairness in billing practices.
A study by the National Regulatory Research Institute highlighted that many of these fees could be mitigated or eliminated altogether, ensuring that all customers pay only what is fair for the service they receive. Adopting such measures will not only promote transparency but also trust between consumers and providers.
We urge the Michigan PSC to step in and protect consumers by capping these "junk fees" and imposing stricter regulations on billing practices. It's time to hold Consumers Energy accountable and ensure that energy remains accessible to all Michigan residents, particularly those who are most vulnerable.
Please join me in this fight against corporate greed. Stand with me and sign this petition to demand action and support for financial fairness for all utility customers in Michigan.
