Cancel the Offensive and Demeaning Animated Netflix Show ‘Good Times’

The Issue

As a member of the black community, I am deeply disturbed by a new animated show that will be released on Netflix in the second week of April. The trailer itself was difficult to watch. This show is not just offensive; it is detrimental to our society as it perpetuates harmful stereotypes about black people. It paints an unpleasant and inaccurate picture of our community, suggesting that we are inherently 'bad'. This narrative is not only false but also defamatory towards black Americans.

This issue goes beyond personal offense. According to a study published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, negative media portrayals can influence public perception and contribute to systemic racism (Mastro & Tropp, 2004). As a Black American who has been a part of the American workforce for almost two decades, I can admit that I have been a victim of racism due to, but not limited to, the negative portrayal of black people in the media. Over the course of these decades, I’ve been stereotyped by coworkers and customers too many times to count. I have been stereotyped based on American television shows even when I visit other countries like Brazil or Great Britain. Television can be damaging when it is used to defame the character of millions of people. By allowing this show to continue airing, Netflix indirectly supports these harmful stereotypes.

We cannot stand idle while such damaging content continues to be broadcasted. We urge Netflix to take immediate action by canceling this offensive animated show. We call on everyone who believes in equality and fair representation in media to sign this petition. Your signature can help us send a strong message against racial stereotyping and defamation in entertainment.
