The Issue

I, like many residents of Sunny Isles Beach, depend on my electric scooter for daily transportation. Our community is filled with individuals, from students to professionals, who use these eco-friendly scooters to navigate efficiently and sustainably. The newly adopted ordinance against electric scooters threatens to disrupt not just my routine, but the lives of a significant portion of our community.

Sunny Isles Beach is known for its progressive approach to environmental sustainability. Banning electric scooters directly contradicts our town's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting green transportation options. According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials, electric scooters are linked to a reduction in air pollution and traffic congestion, making them crucial to our urban infrastructure.

The fallout from this ordinance will be wide-reaching. Families who rely on scooters for school commutes, businesses that cater to tourists using scooters, and residents who choose not to drive have not been considered. The city should focus on promoting safe scooter usage instead. Implementing designated scooter lanes and conducting safety workshops would make a significant positive impact without stripping away this vital transport option.

Furthermore, reducing scooter privileges could lead to increased car usage. Data from the International Energy Agency indicates that road vehicles are responsible for nearly 75% of the world's total CO2 emissions from transport. Discouraging eco-friendly alternatives like electric scooters only exacerbates these issues.

I urge the city council of Sunny Isles Beach to reconsider and devise a more balanced approach that factors in safety concerns while preserving sustainable transport options for its citizens. Let us embrace innovation and green mobility rather than curtail it.

Please join me in signing this petition to oppose the new ordinance and advocate for smart, sustainable solutions for our community.
