Cancel the Hebbal Short tunnel project
Cancel the Hebbal Short tunnel project
The Issue
We call upon the Government of Karnataka to immediately halt the proposed Hebbal Short Tunnel project. This project represents an unjustifiable expenditure of over ₹2,200 crore for just 2.2 kilometres of roadway, with no conclusive evidence that it will provide a long-term solution to Bengaluru's traffic congestion. Transport experts have warned that the tunnel is likely to shift traffic bottlenecks to its entry and exit points while encouraging more private vehicle use over time, ultimately reducing its effectiveness. The project has also been criticised for proceeding without a fully transparent, independent feasibility and cost-benefit assessment. At a time when the Airport Metro corridor is already being developed to serve the same corridor, public funds should instead be directed towards strengthening public transport, improving bus connectivity, upgrading junctions, and creating safer infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. Bengaluru deserves sustainable, cost-effective transport solutions, not an expensive tunnel whose long-term benefits remain uncertain. We therefore urge the Government to cancel the Hebbal Short Tunnel project and redirect these resources towards infrastructure that benefits the greatest number of people.
