Cancel the California International Airshow in Salinas, CA
The Issue
It's time we bid the California International Airshow in Salinas adieu.
The social, health, and environmental consequences these annual air acrobatics have on our community far outweigh any pros.
The noise pollution caused by the airshow alone is in one word: unbearable. The loud and unpredictable rumbling disrupts neighborhoods, business activities, and local wildlife. It's particularly distressing for families with young children, the elderly, pets, and anyone suffering from noise sensitivity or related health conditions. Let us not forget our large veteran community in the Central Coast -- folks living with PTSD whom these events tangentially claim to pay homage to. This does not seem very respectful in the least.
The environmental impact is nothing to scoff at, either. Large aircraft burn through thousands of gallons of fuel. In 2001, the Duluth News Tribune estimated (and later confirmed) each Blue Angels jet uses 1,300 gallons of jet fuel per plane per 75-minute show. Factor in six planes per show and you get the combustion power of 7,800 gallons of fuel -- gas emissions, toxic materials, and air pollution galore!
And while the airshow claims to reinvest millions back to local nonprofits, try googling where those funds are actually going. Up-to-date information is not easily available. We do not know what agencies are receiving those funds or if we want to continue funneling resources into organizations that do not align with our rich community values.
The California International Airshow deprioritizes the health, safety, and well-being of its citizens over not-so-cheap thrills. And if this event brings in so much revenue and local commerce, let's question why our Monterey neighbors aren't fighting for the opportunity to host this shindig themselves. Are their health and environmental concerns greater than ours?
