Cancel school on 1/18 and 1/19 due to hazardous conditions in Fairfax County

The Issue

In Fairfax county, currently there is an abundance of ice and snow in the roads and sidewalks, as well as incredibly cold weather. To elaborate, the roads have become hazardous due to the ice, which could easily cause car crashes and accidents with teen drivers and adult drivers alike. Also, buses will be unlikely to start in these conditions, not to mention it will be incredibly hazardous to drive said buses. To add to this argument, at the time of writing this petition, at 7 AM for highschool students, it will be 16° Fahrenheit, at 8 AM for elementary students it will be 18° Fahrenheit, and at 6 AM for middle school students it will be 16° as well. This is not even taking into account the wind chill, which will make it most likely several degrees colder. At these times, we must account for the children whom walk to school and take buses. Students will either be left waiting in the cold for buses which will arguably take longer to start, or they will be walking to school in the cold, not to mention the abundance of ice.

To add onto this argument, at the time of writing this petition, there is a large chance of snow in the forecast on Friday, 1/19/24. This will add onto the already abundant snow, which has yet to melt alongside the ice, effectively creating yet another hazard of inclement weather. We find the lack of proper action on account of the superintendent to be negligent towards students, effectively putting their lives or their health in danger, and we know that many students will feel the same way about all of these inclement weather hazards.

it is in these times that we call upon the superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools to close school for both the days of 1/18/24 and 1/19/24, or at the very least we call for a delay of 2 hours on 1/18/24, and for the forecast to be allowed to play out on 1/19/24 to see the direction the predicted inclement weather will go. This will allow the abundant snow and ice a chance to melt, and will help keep students safe and secure during these hazardous conditions.
