Cancel regents exams during knicks nba finals celebrations
The Issue
I've been a lifelong fan of the New York Knicks, and this year, my son and I have been eagerly awaiting their victory in the NBA Finals. Unfortunately, this joy is overshadowed by the schedule of the regents exams. My son has a regent exam on Thursday, June 18th, the same day of the NBA finals parade, a once-in-a-lifetime event we've dreamed of attending together.
The New York Knicks are more than just a basketball team; they are a symbol of perseverance and community spirit in our city. Their journey to the NBA Finals is a historic achievement worthy of celebration. It is deeply disappointing and heartbreaking that students, like my son, are unable to partake in these celebrations because of the rigid academic calendar.
New York State's regents exams serve as important academic assessments, but flexibility can be shown in extraordinary cases. Other institutions have demonstrated the ability to adjust schedules during significant milestones, setting a precedent that New York can follow. For instance, exams were postponed following events of national significance, illustrating that academic calendars can accommodate exceptional civic events.
I urge the New York State Department of Education to reconsider the exam schedule in light of this historic victory. Cancelling or rescheduling regents exams will allow students and families to participate in the NBA Finals parade, fostering community involvement and allowing them to create lifelong memories.
Let us not deny this generation the opportunity to be part of a moment that celebrates teamwork, resilience, and achievement—a hallmark of the values we strive to teach within educational systems.
Please join me in requesting the cancellation of all regents exams in honor of the New York Knicks' momentous victory this month. Sign this petition to ensure our children can partake in this historic celebration!
