The Issue

We, the taxpayers of Thunder Bay, love our local waterfront park. It's a place where families come together, individuals find solace, and communities thrive. However, the imposition of pay parking has become a burden on many residents who simply want to enjoy the park without the extra financial strain.

Thunder Bay's waterfront is a shared treasure, a place meant for relaxation and community building. The introduction of pay parking has erected unnecessary barriers to this communal space. Our city values accessibility and inclusivity, principles that are contradicted when individuals are discouraged from visiting due to parking fees.

Consider parents who wish to bring their children for a day of fun by the water, the elderly who cherish their peaceful walks, or students who find inspiration in nature. Each of these groups is negatively impacted by this additional cost, which disproportionately affects lower-income families and individuals.

Furthermore, we believe our tax contributions should support community amenities like the waterfront without imposing additional charges. Our taxes can be reallocated to maintain the park and manage parking without these fees. Other cities in Canada, like Kingston and Nanaimo, successfully offer free waterfront parking without compromising amenities.

Let us create a more welcoming and accessible environment for all residents of Thunder Bay. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to revoke the pay parking policy at our waterfront park and reinstate free parking for everyone. Together, we can ensure our public spaces remain accessible, enjoyable, and inclusive for all residents. Please join us in making a stand for a more equitable community space. Sign today to show your support and make a difference in Thunder Bay.
