Cancel MCPS school on 2/23/26 for dangerous snow conditions
The Issue
Growing up in Montgomery County, I've always known that our winters can be brutal, with snowstorms sometimes covering our streets in deep layers of snow and ice. Going to school on days when the roads are treacherous has always been a nerve-wracking experience. This concern grows for parents and guardians in MCPS, knowing that their children may have to brave these dangerous conditions.
It has particularly hit home when I think about the safety of me and my fellow students. The idea of children standing at bus stops, navigating slick sidewalks, or traveling in school buses that might not handle well on icy roads is deeply concerning. The priority should always be the safety and well-being of our young people, rather than perfect attendance records or uncompromised academic schedules. As a student, I have the first hand experience of those dangerous journeys just to get to school.
This being said, it is time for MCPS to step up to the plate and cancel school for Monday, February 23. If the safety of students really is a top priority, don’t put them in danger: cancel school.
