Cancel Married to Medicine" TV Show for Unprofessional Representation of Doctors and Women

The Issue

As a woman deeply concerned about the representation of women, particularly black women and doctors, on television, I find the portrayals on the TV show, "Married to Medicine", deeply troubling. This hit reality show, produced by Purveyors of Pop and Fremantle Media North America, has gathered millions of viewers since its debut in 2013, but its depictions are a disgrace.

The show is deemed to represent a highly unprofessional image of doctors and portrays black women in a demeaning light. It is disheartening to see such stereotypes being propagated, undermining years of hard work and progress made by women and doctors in our society.

A study by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media found that reality TV shows often propagate harmful stereotypes about women, with women being twice as likely to be shown in sexually revealing clothing compared to men. ("The Impact of Reality Television on Society: Reinforcing or Changing Stereotypes?").

In the specific context of black women and physicians, the harm is dual. The Association of American Medical Colleges reports that only 5% of active physicians in 2018 were black (AAMC, 2019). By portraying such a critical demographic so poorly, shows like "Married to Medicine" effectively deter young black women from choosing these professionally essential roles.

Therefore, we are rallying the public against such negative representation in the media. We ask for your support in petitioning network executives to realize the negative impact of their programming and cancel "Married to Medicine are consider, removing  Heavenly Kimes. It's time to show respect to the doctors and black women who are vital to our society. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard.
