The Issue
As a student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), I understand the immense pressure that accompanies finals week. This pressure has been exacerbated by a recent and critical issue that impacts our ability to perform our best: a targeted hack has taken down the Canvas platform, the primary tool we rely on daily.
Canvas is not just a website for us — it is the backbone of our academic lives. It holds our study guides, lecture slides, assignments, review sessions, practice exams, grades, announcements, and vital final exam instructions. Imagine losing access to all of these resources during the most critical time of the semester. It's more than an inconvenience; it's a disruption that causes panic, confusion, and places students at an unfair disadvantage.
Given the situation, it is imperative that the University leadership, starting with the Dean, acknowledges the severity of this problem. We urge UIUC to consider canceling finals until access is restored or find alternative accommodations that ensure fairness and equity for all students. Without the resources and communication tools provided by Canvas, it is impossible for students to adequately prepare for their exams.
Furthermore, this situation is not just about academics; it concerns the well-being of the student body. The anxiety and stress caused by this issue can be overwhelming, leading to detrimental effects on students' mental health. Finals are stressful enough without the added burden of technical difficulties beyond our control.
To truly support the student body, the administration must show empathy and leadership by making decisions that reflect an understanding of our current challenges. We suggest exploring options such as postponing finals or implementing an alternative assessment method that doesn’t rely solely on the currently inaccessible materials.
This is not just a plea for fairness but a call to action to uphold the quality and integrity of the education at UIUC. Please sign this petition to let our voices be heard and to bring about a just resolution to this pressing issue. Your support can make a significant difference.
