Cancel Classes at Umass Lowell Due to Shooting Threat

Cancel Classes at Umass Lowell Due to Shooting Threat
The Issue
I am a student at Umass Lowell, and I’m personally threatened by the recent active shooter threat at the South Campus. This situation has left many students, including myself, feeling anxious and unsafe. I believe it is the University’s responsibility to prioritize the safety of its students, faculty, and staff by taking immediate precautionary measures. Canceling classes at all Umass Lowell campuses for tomorrow (September 4th 2025) is a necessary step in safeguarding the university community during this unsettling time.
A credible threat has been reported, alarming students and their families who are deeply concerned about their well-being. Campuses should be havens of learning, not environments where fear overshadows education. Allowing students to stay indoors would significantly reduce exposure to potential dangers and give law enforcement the space needed to conduct thorough investigations and implement safety protocols.
In this unpredictable climate, it’s essential that the student body receives the necessary support to feel secure. Remote learning provisions could be implemented quickly, allowing students to continue their education uninterrupted while minimizing risk.
Providing clarity in communication between university officials and students is crucial. By addressing concerns directly and transparently, the administration can foster trust within the community and demonstrate a committed effort to protecting everyone on campus.
Support the call to prioritize student safety by signing this petition urging Umass Lowell to cancel all classes tomorrow. Let's take the steps necessary to ensure a safer learning environment for the entire community.
