Vets need to start looking at Medical Marijuana as an option for dying pets
The Issue
Before Christmas our 9yr old American Bulldog "Pig" (due to the fact she looked like a cute piglet when she was a puppy) , fell ill, we took her for numerous testing. She was having a hard time going to the bathroom, it was extremely painful, she had blood in her urine, was dropping wieght etc. During this time the tests were showing an abnormality, but no one knew what it was. Nor did anyone prescribe pain medication, only antibiotics. So she continued to suffer until they told us to take her to the specialist. We had to wait until after Christmas to get in with the Veterinary College ( I do have to say the vets and staff there were amazing and compassionate. With a genuine love for the animals), there we had to redo the ultra sound, as they needed a real time one, as well as they ran several tests. She was than diagnosed with having a large inoperatable tumor surrounding her colon and bladder, as well as having an ecoli infection in her bladder (which was treated with antibiotics). Due to the size of the cancerous tumor she basically was given 2 mths to live (that was over a mth ago). Chemo therapy and radiation ( to help eleviate the pressure of the tumor) was an option, but offered little to no hope in increasing her lifespan. The last thing we wanted to do, was fill her last days with added pain and suffing from the treatments.
We got in touch with a medical dispensary in our area, and he was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and we discussed treatment for "Pig" , I was excited as it gave me a glimmer of hope on fighting the cancer, or at the very least lessen her pain, without all the nasty side effects associated with Chemo therapy and radiation. All we needed was a vet to fill out the appropriate paper work. They refused telling me "unfortunately veterinarians in Canada are not legally able to prescribe marijuana for their patients" . We were even more than willing for them to use her as a case study, even if that meant making the 6hr drive there and back to the College on a regular basis.
It has been over a month since Pig was diagnosed, we are losing time, she again is dropping wieght, and when I look into her eyes, I can see her time is coming to an end. It breaks my heart that there is a treatment option available, but it is out of our grasp.
By the time this petition gets enough signatures for them to take notice, I am sure Pig will be gone, but I am begging you to sign this so that it may be an option for other pet owners :(
