Gestalt Language Processing Requirement in Canadian SLP Programs
The Issue
Gestalt language processing is a learning style observed in both neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals. Canadian universities continue to teach analytic language learning styles only, despite decades of longitudinal evidence of the presence of two trajectories of language development (analytic and gestalt). It is critical that the research base and methodologies to support gestalt language development be included in child language courses for speech-language pathology students in Canadian programs. This will ensure that new graduates are aware of the need to ascertain the processing style of the child they are working with, before choosing a treatment protocol. The failure to teach this critical information results in new graduates assessing and providing interventions for gestalt processors that DO NOT support these clients in reaching their next stage of language development.
Please sign this petition if you are an SLP and support the inclusion of gestalt language processing in Canadian SLP University programs. Please sign with your credentials as well as the location (city) you practice in within Canada.
It is my hope that this will be one of the first steps to ensure that new Canadian SLPs are better prepared to support these children and give them a voice!
