Justice for the Saskatoon freezing death victims

The Issue

The Saskatoon freezing deaths were a series of deaths of indigenous Canadian people in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in the early 2000s. Their deaths were caused by members of the Saskatoon Police Service who would arrest indigenous people, usually men for drunkenness and/or disorderly behavior, allegedly without cause at times, and then drive them out of the city at night in winter, where they would abandon them. The practice was known as taking indigenous people for starlight tours and dates back to at least 1976. As of 2020, despite convictions for related offenses, no Saskatoon police officer has been convicted specifically for having caused freezing deaths.

I have  lived in Canada my entire life and am indigenous, and I just found out about the Saskatoon freezing deaths. This is something that needs to be talked about more, this is something we have to fight against. The last residential school didn’t close until 1996. Indigenous women are going missing and getting murdered all over Canada. And I feel as if it’s not being talked about enough, and not enough is being done to fix the racial injustice we have here in Canada. I think a good start to changing our country would be to get justice for all the innocent indigenous lives who were taken by the Saskatoon police force.

Victims who died from hypothermia include Rodney Naistus, Lawrence Wegner, and Neil Stonechild.

The victims and the family & friends of the victims deserve justice. Please help me get justice for them, please sign this petition and share it to as many people as possible! Get the word out about the Saskatoon freezing deaths, make it a more known thing. The victims deserve for people to at least know about them, and try to get justice for them.
