People with Down Syndrome are people. They are not endangered.

People with Down Syndrome are people. They are not endangered.

The Issue

The Canadian Down Syndrome society is petitioning the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to have people living with Down Syndrome classified as endangered.  They are dressing up people with Down Syndrome like animals in their video campaign to have people sign the petition. As a parent and an advocate I am appalled by this, my daughter will not be compared to an animal. This is a human rights issue. Let’s focus on change and educating people on those who live with Down Syndrome. Let’s find ways to support them at all stages of their life and not try to have those living with Down Syndrome be the first people listed as endangered.

Lets not make a video campaign with our loved ones with Down syndrome dressed up like animals. People will see this and will call those with DS amimals. This is not right. Please stop depicting people with Down Syndrome as endangered animals. How are we going to explain this to adults who think that the CDSS are saying they are like an animal, an endarged one?

We are asking the CDSS to stop portraying people living with Down Syndrome as animals. It's not right.
