On November 25th, the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada notified us that Canada Post is officially under federal investigation for the way it handled our request for the records behind the closure of the Vic West postal outlet.
This is exactly what Canada Post did:
They ignored our repeated requests for closure justification for 3 months. After we filed an Access to Information Act request, they then took the full 30 days permitted under the law and produced one single sentence as their entire explanation:
“Not required in network. Close at contract expiry October 28, 2025.”
That was it.
Not a single page of analysis.
Not a single justification.
Not a single policy, criteria, assessment, or sign-off.
Not a single indication of oversight by the Board or the Minister.
They withheld everything else under “confidentiality.”
And now the Information Commissioner has confirmed that our allegations are serious enough to warrant a full federal investigation into whether Canada Post improperly withheld records and whether additional records should exist that they failed to provide.
This validates what our community has been raising for months:
Canada Post did not just close a cost neutral, revenue generating outlet in a growing neighbourhood without justification, they are now refusing to explain the decision at all.
This fight is no longer about one postal outlet.
It is now about a Crown corporation shielding its decision-making from Canadians, while shutting down profitable public services under the vague label of “network management”, all at the same time it reports daily losses in the range of 10 million dollars.
Meanwhile, as of today our petition has reached 1,225 signatures, because people across Vic West and across Canada know something is deeply wrong when public services disappear and the public is denied the right to see why.
This investigation is the first crack in Canada Post’s wall of silence.
Until the full decision record is released, the public gets the transparency it deserves, and the governance behind these closures is held to account, this effort will not stop.
