Canada Needs a Better Voting System: Implement Ranged Voting for Fair Representation!

The Issue

Canada's current First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) voting system doesn't adequately reflect the diverse opinions of our country. When governments form majority parliaments with less than 40% of the popular vote, many Canadians justifiably feel their voices aren't being heard. It's time to modernize our electoral system to make it fairer, more inclusive, and truly democratic.

We propose replacing FPTP with Ranged Voting, a system where voters score each candidate on a scale (e.g., 0-10), allowing for a more accurate expression of voter preferences.

The Problem with Our Current System:
Under FPTP, governments frequently rule with "false majorities." For example, in the 2015 federal election, the Liberal Party won a majority government with just 39.5% of the popular vote. That means over 60% of Canadians did not vote for the governing party, yet that party received 100% of the governing power.

This pattern repeats across elections and parties.

Our current system:

  • Forces strategic voting rather than honest preference expression
  • Creates regional divisions and uneven representation
  • Discourages voter participation when people feel their votes don't matter

Why Ranged Voting is a Strong Choice for Canada:
Ranged Voting harnesses the "wisdom of crowds" – the proven principle that the average of many independent judgments often produces remarkably accurate results. Just as the average guess of a jar of gumballs from a large group is typically close to the correct number, Ranged Voting aggregates voter preferences to find candidates with the broadest support.

With Ranged Voting:

  • Express Your Full Opinion: Rate each candidate based on how much you support them
  • Every Vote Counts: Your ratings affect the final outcome even if your top choice doesn't win
  • Reduce Polarization: Candidates are incentivized to appeal broadly, not just to their base
  • Simple to Use: Rating candidates is as familiar as rating a restaurant or online purchase

How Ranged Voting Works:
On your ballot, you give each candidate a score (e.g., 0-10). You can give the same score to multiple candidates. The candidate with the highest average score wins.

This system is intuitive and provides a more nuanced reflection of voter preferences than simply selecting one candidate.

What We're Asking For:
We call on Parliament to:

  1. Establish an independent, non-partisan Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform with representatives from across Canada
  2. Task this Assembly with evaluating Ranged Voting and other alternatives to FPTP
  3. Commit to implementing the Assembly's recommendations for the next federal election

Why This Matters:
Electoral reform isn't about benefiting any specific party – it's about creating a system where every Canadian's voice matters. By modernizing our voting system, we can strengthen our democracy, encourage greater civic participation, and ensure our government truly represents the will of the people.

This is about building a stronger, more representative democracy for future generations of Canadians. Let's make this change together.
