Victory for sharks in Delta BC! We did it! "My bylaw proposal to prohibit the sale of shark fin in Delta was unanimously approved by Mayor George Harvie and Council” says Kendra, local shark activist.
After nearly a year of petitioning, writing letters and being turned down multiple times: Kendra’s commitment and perseverance paid off. She successfully convinced the municipality of Delta to ban shark fin products.
Kendra's work in Delta is what inspired our national petition. We are so proud of this accomplishment! Now, we need your help more than ever to push for a national ban on the import and export of shark fins in Canada.
Bill S-328 will be voted on this month in the House of Commons. The Bill is in the final stages before becoming law, having already passed the Senate last fall. Please take a few minutes out of your day to email your local Member of Parliament (MP) and tell them to support Bill S-238 to end the importation and exportation of shark fins in Canada.
Why is this so important? Every year, up to 73 million sharks end up in the global fin trade, many of which are endangered species. Shark finning is illegal in Canadian waters, yet Canada is currently the largest importer of shark fins outside of Asia. As an apex predator, sharks are essential to healthy ecosystems.
“Now it’s time to move toward an even bigger goal of banning the import/export of shark fin into Canada as a whole” Kendra says. “Bill S-238 has advanced to the House of Commons, we are so close to winning this!”
Join us in passing a national #FinBanNow! Over 220,000 people have taken a stand: it’s more important than ever to ensure Bill S-238 passes the House of Commons. Sharks are depending on us to stand up for their protection, don’t let them down, please contact your local MP and keep sharing the petition.
