Petition updateEnd the cruel shark fin trade in CanadaIs there shark on your plate?

Canada has a seafood fraud problem. Last year, Oceana Canada tested nearly 400 seafood samples from five cities across Canada. A shocking 44 per cent of them were mislabelled.

This national investigation into seafood fraud and mislabelling — the most comprehensive ever conducted in Canada — found cheaper haddock and pollock substituted for cod; farmed salmon served up as wild salmon; and escolar (a fish banned in many countries because of its health risks) masquerading as butterfish or white tuna.

And shark is no exception. According to testing done in the US by Rob Stewart for his film, Sharkwater Extinction, it’s quite likely you’ve consumed shark or have shark products in your home without even knowing. Shark can be disguised in mislabelled seafood, cosmetics and even pet food!

We’re calling on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to implement stronger labelling requirements and boat-to-plate traceability. This is the only way to ensure all seafood sold in Canada is safe, honestly labelled and legally caught – and to keep shark off our plates.

You’ve already proven you’re willing to stand up for sharks, so can you lend your voice one more time? Sign our petition to tell CFIA you want change and join the conversation with #StopSeafoodFraud.

For the oceans,

Oceana Canada
