Brandon Turtle River Excavation

Brandon Turtle River Excavation
The Issue
Brandon's RV Campground, Turtle River Crossing is the site of unmarked graves from Brandon's Residential School. This school ran from 1895-1970. Current owner, who is the third owner of the campground, says he had no idea. At residential schools, according to the commissioner's report, child abuse was "institutionalized at residential schools and the entire system represented an attempt at cultural genocide". Anne Lindsay, a researcher, has spent more than ten years trying to identify the bodies that range from ages 7-16 and dates back to the 1900's. Lindsay says she only found the bodies using a handwritten map drawn by a former student. Indigenous children died from malnutrition, harsh disciplines, suicides, illnesses and hard labor. Reports that children were being forced to use outdated farm equipment lead to fatalities as well. We want the site excavated and these bodies laid to rest properly. The City of Brandon needs to address their history and rectify a memorial for families affected. Documents need to be provided for identifying and locating these burial sites. Only then can there be true reconciliation for the families and lives affected.
