The Issue

The issues of Chicken ownership in Menasha WI has been debated over the last few years - and with the rising cost of groceries, this should be something we discuss again.

There are many benefits to backyard chickens. Keeping chickens in your backyard is a great way to promote local, sustainable food systems.

But why should you care about keeping chickens in your backyard?

You may already know that keeping chickens can help supply you with fresh, healthy eggs from well-cared-for animals. Feeding your chickens kitchen scraps also helps to reduce landfill waste. On average, a chicken consumes 330 lb of food waste per year.

Local food systems are better for the environment and better for our health. In addition to growing your own food and reducing carbon emissions via less garbage in landfills.

Backyard Chickens

Our neighboring cities (Neenah, Fox Crossing, Appleton, Harrison, Kaukauna, Sherwood, and Kimberly) have successfully implemented backyard chickens with rules and regulations to keep everyone safe.

Some of these successful regulations include:

-A maximum of 4 poultry per single-family household

-No roosters.

-All poultry coops and yards shall be kept in a clean, sanitary condition and free from all objectionable odors, and shall be subject to the inspection and approval of the Health Officer.

-Poultry shall be provided with a covered enclosure and must be kept in the covered enclosure or a fenced enclosure at all times.

-The enclosure shall be located no closer than 25 feet to any neighboring home.
