Build a Bridge to Russell Island

The issue

Mr Newman, Peter J Dowling NLP MP for Redlands, Mayor Karen Williams & Councillor Mark Edwards of RCC - WE, the residents of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI), feel we are the poor country cousins of Bayside Brisbane. We 'Islanders' have been overlooked by your government long enough and feel it's about time money was spent on our islands infrastructure, and most sensibly and urgently - on building a bridge to Russell Island. We are constantly being slugged by increasing bus, ferry and barge fares - over and above the CPI. We are also the only people in Queensland, who are paying $88.00pa through our rates - for inclusion into the GO CARD travel system. Both RCC and Peter Dowling agree we need a bridge - but we are told by you via your deputy Jeff Seeney  "NO FUNDS AVAILABLE - NOT VIABLE etc." Russell Island is a tourist hub in the making with many natural attractions. Private investors have applied to develop Russell, but have been declined. WHY? Because it would mean putting in infrastructure in the guise of bitumized roads, adequate street lighting and footpaths. The this fiscal year alone, two young lads under ten were killed within 6mths of each other on our main roads, metres away from their homes all because of insufficient lighting and no footpaths. SMBI Parking and Transport (ferries, barges & buses) are inadequate and overpriced for islanders and visitiors alike. Ferries are constantly over-crowded and/or unreliable due to breaking down - as are the Barges (same company). There are NOT enough parking bays for us at Redland Bay marina. Why are we made to constantly pay parking fines because town planners failed to recognize SMBI future growth? Why are we discriminated against because we are trying to get home after a hard day's work? Why are we being booked for parking in the trailer park at Weinam Creek because of lack of spaces? The trailer park is mostly empty weekdays and yet only 'certain' trailer-bays are available for parking SMBI cars. Move the Trailer parking down to the Barge area and redevelop our area for more FREE car parking. The PDA for the marina in Weinam Creek is merely a bandaid solution and nothing but a revenue raiser. There is nothing to alleviate our parking problems in it - only more money for us to pay out. It will not remedy what we truly need - A BRIDGE. The proposed PDA will merely amplify the stress and financial hardship we are constantly placed under and exasperate our situation ever further. You claim to care about your state, yet you force us to remain stunted and devoid of the infrastructure that our mainland suburbs enjoy. Where are our rate monies going, because we see very little of it being spent here? Really Mr Newman - ARE YOU PLAYING FAIR . . . .  OR PLAYING FAVOURITES???
