Add education on structural racism and discrimination to already mandatory classes

Add education on structural racism and discrimination to already mandatory classes
The Issue
Whereas a series of petitions have already been created advocating to enhance education on structural discrimination for individual schools, the goal of this petition is to be more accessible, and thus used more broadly, for students at any school across the nation as leverage to increase access to education on systematic racism within the United States. With enough of a public outcry, schools will have a moral obligation to fulfill the wishes of students across the nation. Education regarding racism within the U.S. can, and should, fit into everyday history classes considering the vital role it has played in our nation's history. Children are not born preconditioned to discrimination, and as such, it is our responsibility to ensure that from an early age, people learn the value of anti-racism. Time and time again, as listed in the examples below, structural racism has been proven to exist. It is time to put partisan issues aside and focus on education that could improve the livelihoods, and save the lives, of minority communities across the nation. Course curriculum could include:
- History of slavery within the U.S.
- Jim Crowe
- White privilege
- White Supremacy
- Black Panther Movement
- Mass incarceration
- Redlining
- Racial gerrymandering
- Illicit substance punishment disparities
- Cultural representation
- Police brutality
- Implicit bias
- etc. etc. etc.
Children form some of their most fundamental beliefs at a young age through social conditioning, and so it is vital that education on the issues that can be life-threatening if under instructed, are taught at a young age. It is only through awareness that structural racism can begin to be attacked and dissolved in the long term.
