Noor Inayat Khan deserves to be honoured like her other colleagues Violette Szabo, G.C. and Odette Hallowes, G.C. both of whom have plaques and memorials in London. Violette Szabo’s bust on the South Bank by Karen Newman is helping keep the story of her bravery alive and is a place for quiet reflection.

Noor’s bust in Gordon Square, near the house where she lived, also sculpted by Karen Newman, will be a visual treat in a quiet north-east corner of the Square. It’s location in the flower-beds in the corner will add a three-dimensional quality as it will be partially visible from outside as well. Nor will it be located in the main square or disturb the lawn. The natural material for the stone and the hand-carved lettering also adds to the beauty of the sculpture and places it in harmony with the surroundings.

Gordon Square is a place where many students and members of the public like to sit. Public sculptures are inspirational and lift one’s spirit, especially, as in this case, it is of a young woman who sacrificed her life for Britain. It will also bring local history alive for the residents and visitors.

The sculpture will be a timely reminder that we must not forget the principles of non-violence and religious harmony that Noor stood for, and for which she unhesitatingly sacrificed her life.

A sculpture of Noor Inayat Khan will also recognise the contribution of the Asian community in Britain. It is an honour that Noor richly deserves.
