Ever since COVID-19 was labelled a global pandemic, all nations across the world have done their best to flatten the curve as much as possible. This was commonly achieved by mandating face masks and gloves, closure of non-essential stores and most importantly putting education to a halt by closing schools and colleges.  However, such actions does come with its own set of consequences.

Students were divided once they received the news of the 2020 May / June session will not take place due to COVID-19. Some were relieved that they will be safe during these harsh times from the virus and still getting the chance to move forward with their academic careers without interruptions. While others were not so happy due to them missing the opportunity of earning their grades based only on their exam performance.

Regardless of which category you fall into, we all can agree that candidates sitting for the October/November session will not have it fairly. By quotes from students, like myself and others, we have come together to realize that online learning is only stressful and confusing. Keeping lessons the same whilst completely changing the entire platform in which they are taught is very unrealistic - and this has proven to be true during online assessments. In short, current IGCSE and A-level students are unprepared. Furthermore, many students have complained about the bad syllabus coverage and that most of them had to rely heavily on self-studying.

Moreover, COVID-19 has not died out yet. Holding any type of large scale gathering events of more than 5 people will put lives at risk - and this has been proven during July when an ACT test center had an outbreak where two students were tested positive after sitting the exam with 20 other exam takers for hours. Not to forget that researchers have also proven that a second wave of COVID-19 is more likely to appear during Autumn and that it would be deadlier and more infectious than the first wave.

Many students believe that the exam should be cancelled once again as it would be unfair for October/November test takers to be put through a full scale exam while going through the exact same obstacles that May/June test takers have been through.

May/June test takers who are unhappy with their assessed grades have the right to re-take the exam during October/November, but it would only be fair to them and not first time test takers as they have the priority.

In short, cancelling the exam is the ideal solution here as students will not be expected to perform in the best of their ability. By giving students predicted grades you would ensure that all students get the chance to move forward with their careers without any interruptions and at the same time making it fair for all 2020 test takers.

Yours sincerely, year 11 students.
