Calling on the Government to Investigate and Sanction Meralco
The Issue
The purpose of this petition is to call the attention of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the Senate Committee on Energy, and the House Committee on Energy to investigate and give proper sanctions to Meralco for several billing anomalies.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our daily lives, including the loss of livelihood for some families. To make things worse, after the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), we are faced with questionable bills that we didn't really consume and can't afford to pay.
In the previous months, many customers of Meralco have complained about the following issues:
- High Billing: Some customers have abnormally high bills which are double or triple their average billing before ECQ.
- No Billing: Some customers did not receive any billing statements for the previous months.
- Non-occupancy: Some customers are still being charged a high amount even if there are no people in their home or business during the ECQ.
- Missing Payments: Some customers reported that their previous payments during the ECQ are not reflected in their current bill.
There has been a senate hearing for this but nothing good really happened for the customers. Meralco is still charging us with questionable amounts and just made the payment in "installments".
Personally, my family has experienced high billing resulting in a 600% increase. From 50KWH consumption, it jumped to 300KWH without any drastic changes in our activities at home.
There are four ways to send a complaint to Meralco: Hotline, Email, Social Media, and Local Business Centers. We've tried all channels and they didn't give a proper response. They are just making us run in circles.
- We went to the local business center and we were told to be in line as early as 4 am just to get a number without assurance that we will be entertained.
- We tried sending a message on social media and they said just to wait for an email.
- We followed-up via email and they told us to call the Hotline.
- We called the Hotline, either there's no response or they just ask customers to send an email or go to the business center.
Because Meralco's customer support is really poor, we decided to contact ERC through the emails they provided. Still, there's no response.
Meralco is a monopoly here. Only the Philippine Government can investigate and sanction it. If we don't push the government to act, we will be forced to pay questionable amounts. This is completely unacceptable, especially that most of us are struggling financially.
