Calling on NYS Legislators: Allow Noise Cameras in Westchester

The Issue

A recent NY Times story highlights the success of noise cameras and NYC expanding its use of cameras.

Why not Westchester County? Or…the Town of Greenburgh?  Noise is a big quality of life problem in our region.

We are reaching out to State Legislators and county officials asking that they authorize cameras in Westchester.

Noise pollution is a major quality of life problem in Greenburgh and in communities around Westchester. I get frequent calls from residents who live on busy streets who can’t fall asleep in the middle of the night because of the excessive noise from racing cars.

A former County Legislator, Ruth Walter, made a suggestion a number of years ago to county leaders that was supported by county government officials but never implemented: that Westchester should purchase noise cameras. These noise cameras are in use around the world and improve residents quality of life. Why not Westchester?

An article in the NY Times on Sunday April 13, 2024  about noise pollution said that “in recent years the city has embraced new technology to capture vehicle noise violations and help lower traffic volume. The City Council in November passed a bill expanding the use of noise cameras which the Department of Environmental Protection uses to ticket people who drive cars with modified mufflers or who honk excessively. The program began in 2022 with just one camera that was moved around to different parts of the city and has since expanded to 10 cameras, according to department spokesman. The city plans to increase the number to 24 by 2025.”

Ruth Walter discusses noise cameras in a recent interview with me.  There is a video at the end of the interview with footage highlighting how the noise cameras work and comments from NYC officials about the noise cameras.

I hope that Westchester leaders will find a way to implement this great idea. I have written to our State Legislators asking that they authorize noise cameras to be used to enforce our Vehicle and Traffic laws.  I would support funding noise cameras in the Greenburgh to address this quality of life concern.
