The Issue

The Hazara are an ethnoreligious minority group located primarily in Afghanistan. While the group has a long history of persecution, its situation has dramatically declined since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. Many have fled to Pakistan and other foreign countries, but those who remain face atrocities by a de-facto authority that disregards any human rights agreements. The Hazara have faced brutal acts of violence from the Taliban, including bombings of Hazara schools and places of worship. There were over 700 Hazara executions in 2022 alone.

The Hazara situation is dire. Multiple members of the Coalition for Genocide Response have stated that the group is at a serious and increasing risk of genocide, which is being met with global silence. If this global inaction continues, Hazara executions, injuries, and torture will increase exponentially.

In order to prevent the acceleration of this dire circumstance, a global response is required. The United Nations Human Rights Council must deploy a large investigative team to collect and document evidence of human rights violations across Afghanistan as soon as possible.
