Call to Address Targeted Harassment of Indian-Origin Australians and All Migrants

Call to Address Targeted Harassment of Indian-Origin Australians and All Migrants

The issue

Australia is a nation built on diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect. Our public spaces should always be safe and welcoming for everyone, regardless of background or heritage.

For many years, Australia made steady progress in promoting inclusion and multicultural harmony. In more recent times, however, community members have observed a rise in public hostility and anti-migrant sentiment, raising concerns about safety and social cohesion.

In recent times, members of migrant communities, including Australians of Indian origin, have raised concerns about increasing instances of racial harassment, intimidation, and hostile behaviour in public spaces. These experiences—whether personally encountered or observed—are contributing to a growing sense of unease and reduced safety for individuals and families.

When such behaviour is left unaddressed, it risks becoming normalised and undermines social cohesion, public safety, and the values Australia stands for. Racial harassment in public spaces is not merely an individual concern; it is a broader societal issue that requires timely, proactive, and constructive action.

This petition calls on the Australian Government and State Governments to take meaningful steps to prevent racially targeted harassment by strengthening reporting mechanisms, ensuring consistent enforcement of existing laws, supporting community-based education initiatives, and promoting public awareness around respect and inclusion.

This petition is not about blaming any group. It is about protecting public safety, reinforcing fairness and respect, and ensuring that all Australians can participate in public life without fear of discrimination or intimidation.

We urge decision-makers to act early and responsibly to preserve Australia’s multicultural harmony and ensure public spaces remain safe and inclusive for everyone. Recognising our shared humanity is fundamental to living together with dignity, respect, and understanding.
