CALL TO ACTION. For The GOOD Of HOCKEY. FIH Exec Board Mtg Friday 15th July Terrassa
The issue
At the FIH Executive Board Meeting to be held in Spain this Friday 15th July decisions MUST be made for the Good of Hockey.
Following the recent findings in the High Court of Delhi against FIH President Narinder Batra, we the undersigned believe that his position as head of the sport of international Hockey is now untenable.
There have been other incidents that have resulted in Mr Batra’s censure during his time as President, but this ruling in the High Court has found him guilty of illegal practices and brought the sport into disrepute.
More importantly at a time when the President of any sporting organization must be seen as being totally impartial, the findings of the court have confirmed that he has still had involvement in hockey in India.
Unfortunately, Mr Batra is not alone. The FIH board is made up of individuals who have failed to relinquish their roles with national associations once elected which makes it hard for they themselves to be able to act with a clear conscience.
We the undersigned petition the board demanding the removal of the current President effective immediately. As the High Court of India ruled “The illegal Post of Life President or Life Member cannot be the stepping-stone for any other position or benefit elsewhere, be it nationally (including in the Indian Olympic Association) or in international bodies. If R-3 has so benefitted, then such benefit or position shall end right away.” (R-3 was the defendant Mr Narinder Dhruv Batra).
We also demand that the financials of FIH for 2019, 2020 and 2021 be made available immediately for National Association scrutiny. Also that all FIH transactions be made immediately transparent and available to all National Associations regarding the FIH Foundation for the years 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Transparency and good governance are essential if the sport is to survive in this highly competitive environment.
