CALL TO ACTION: Adding Asian Languages to Citizen App

Over the course of the pandemic, public safety concerns have been at the front of mind of many friends, family, and community members across the country – especially within our Asian American communities. Until now, we have yet to see a clear course of action from our city officials and we feel there may be no choice than to rely on each other and what we have to keep us safe. Therefore, we must highlight the importance of accessibility to community safety apps such as Citizen.

Citizen is a mobile app that sends users-based safety alerts in real time. It allows users to read updates about ongoing reports, broadcast live video, and leave comments. The app is currently available for iOS and Android devices in 20 cities, including New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Philadelphia. Detroit, Indianapolis, Phoenix, Cincinnati, Chicago, Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Cleveland.

While it is only one of many solutions, we are focusing on Citizen as it is a live reporting tool that sends out real-time safety notifications in cities across the country. Without a wide range of languages available on this app, it creates a barrier for many non-English users who are concerned about their safety and what may be going on around their neighborhoods. Additionally, many are not able to navigate through their language barriers to report to local governments and social media platforms that would otherwise be able to post these updates.

Anti-Asian hate crime has increased by 339% in 2021 as compared to 2020, published in a report by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. We feel the urgency, thus, we are calling on the Citizen's team to prioritize the translation and integration of Chinese, Tagalog, and Korean into its app. We advocate for these three as they are statistically the top three most spoken Asian languages of the United States. Through increasing language access, many immigrants will be able to receive notifications of current neighborhood incidents in the language they comprehend. This positively impacts the seniors who commute for groceries and social services, small business owners who are experiencing theft and break-ins, organizers who have been coordinating patrols, and many more. We hope that by doing so, our loved ones can use these tools in a thoughtful and intentional way to stay informed, reduce harm, and keep our communities safe.


行動倡議: 增加Citizen App的多語言版本
