Call to Accurate Representation of Mainstream Islam in Interfaith Event
The Issue
Muslim students and community members in Waterloo Region are being misrepresented at interfaith events, where Ahmadiyya Islam is presented as “Islam” without including mainstream Muslim perspectives. This confuses attendees, excludes the majority of Muslims, and undermines the integrity of interfaith dialogue. We are asking the organizers of the event, Ahamdiyya Muslim Jama'at, and sponsors such as Wilfred Laurier University, University of Waterloo, Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, and other local institutions to clarify current representation and include recognized mainstream Muslim voices in current and future events.
We acknowledge and appreciate the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at’s efforts in promoting peace, service, and interfaith understanding. Their community outreach and humanitarian work contribute positively to society and reflect values shared across many faiths. Our concern lies not with these intentions, but with ensuring accurate and inclusive representation of Islam in public and interfaith spaces.
Interfaith dialogue is meant to promote understanding, not confusion. When Islam is presented inaccurately, it not only misinforms attendees but also erases the voices of the global Muslim majority. If this continues, the credibility and educational value of interfaith events will be compromised. Therefore, we call on all organizers and sponsoring institutions to:
- Clearly identify the current representation as “Ahmadiyya Islam,” rather than “Islam,” in all event materials and promotions.
- Include a recognized mainstream Muslim Imam or local representative in future interfaith events to ensure authentic and inclusive representation.
By taking these steps, sponsors can uphold fairness, transparency, and the integrity of interfaith collaboration.
As sponsors and institutions that champion inclusion and diversity, the City of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo, Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, Waterloo Regional Police Service, the City of Cambridge, and the City of Kitchener have both the responsibility and opportunity to set a positive precedent. Clarifying representation and inviting authentic Muslim voices will strengthen relationships between communities and demonstrate genuine commitment to equity and truth. Taking action now ensures that future interfaith events accurately reflect the diverse faith landscape of our city, and fosters trust, mutual respect, and true understanding.
